Endemic Kingfishers of Sulawesi | Birding Tangkoko, North Sulawesi, Indonesia

There are 34 kingfishers in Indonesia. The island of Sulawesi has 12 of them, of which six are endemic to Sulawesi. The six endemic kingfishers of Sulawesi are:

  1. Lilac Kingfisher
  2. Green-backed Kingfisher
  3. Great-billed Kingfisher
  4. Sulawesi Dwarf Kingfisher
  5. Scaly Kingfisher
  6. Black-headed Kingfisher

  1. You can find five endemic kingfishers in north Sulawesi, Tangkoko area. On the first day in Tangkoko, we spotted the Lilac Kingfisher at the edge of the forest entrance.

2. The Green-backed Kingfisher was further into the canopy. We spotted it once but missed it. We only found the male bird just before we left the forest.

3. We were looking for the Sulawesi Dwaft Kingfisher near the hilly streams but to no avail. We finally found it in the forest deep inside.

4. The Great-Billed Kighfisher was at the river mouth near Batu Putih Beach. It responded to the calls, but it did not stay long.

5. We did get both male and female of the Scaly Kingfisher in Tomohon. The Black-headed Kingfisher is in southern Sulawesi. It is so amazing to see so many kingfishers in just one place.
