Baby Buffy was on the nest (made of bird’s-nest fern, Asplenium nidus, an epiphytic species). Occasionally peeping out to see the world. However, it was high up, on the tree with partial visibility. Nature lovers and photographers have been monitoring the development of the wild Buffy Fish Owl (Ketupa ketupu) family at Hampstead Wetlands Park in Singapore for the last few months. Amazing photographs have been shared on social media. On March 14, Baby Buffy fledged.

It rained heavily at noon when Baby Buffy fledged. I was in my lazy Sunday afternoon mood when I received a message at 14:00 hour from Eric saying “ Buffy juv is low down. Come”. My wife and I dropped everything, packed our camera gears and went off to Hampstead Wetland Park. We arrived just before 15:00 hour. Baby Buffy was still on the grass patch .

Baby Buffy ended up retreated under the table behind the net of an un-occupied house. Later it managed to balance itself on the top of the net while flapping its wings. But it was down again under the table.

One of the photographers called ACRES to assist in the rescue. ACRES came equipped with high ladder and long pole, they managed to hoist it to a nearby mango tree. Once Baby Buffy was secured on the branch, Mother flew next to Baby Buffy.

It was such an exciting drama to see Baby Buffy on the grass field while both parents stood-guard to protect. Finally, they were all happily reunited. Witnessing the fledging and parenting behaviour of Buffy Fish Owls was a touching and heart warming experience.

How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!

Psalm 133:1

“Unity is strength… when there is team work and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.”
